Eavesdrop on Our Starbucks Conversation
Two legal Nevada courtesans. Two mango chai teas. One surprisingly thoughtful discussion about the five traits that define an exceptional courtesan.
Alice (AL): During my current tour at Sheri's Ranch, I found myself in the most interesting conversation with my colleague Addison about the attributes of a good courtesan. We pondered together over our Iced Mango Cream Chai Lattes on the way back to the ranch, and decided to document our thoughts together.
Addison (AD): There are plenty of beautiful women in this industry. Beauty might catch someone’s eye, but it isn’t what creates a long, successful career. The women who thrive year after year have something much more valuable than physical attractiveness. They have character.
After close to a decade in legal sex work, these are the five qualities we believe every exceptional courtesan should possess.
1. She Knows Her Worth & Has Good Boundaries
(AD): A good courtesan values herself first. She knows what she brings to the table and isn’t afraid to ask for what she deserves. She understands that confidence isn’t arrogance… It’s self-respect. She also knows that NO is a complete sentence. Whether it’s a service she’s uncomfortable providing, a guest who crosses her boundaries, or someone trying to negotiate her into accepting less than she’s worth, she stands firm. Boundaries aren’t barriers to connection. They’re the foundation of trust.
(AL): A good courtesan has clearly defined boundaries when it comes to her services and how she chooses to connect with guests. If a guest is offensive, rude, or unhygienic they may be asked to adjust to her standards or asked to leave entirely. When she accepts a booking that doesn’t value her worth, she may experience doubt and become dispassionate during the experience- a disservice to everyone involved. Instead, a good courtesan knows her worth and politely declines experiences that undervalue her knowledge, expertise, and vulnerability. This is never from a place of judgement over someone’s financial ability to compensate her- but rather from acknowledgement of her value and worth. She is always gracious, but remains firm in her answers.
2. She has High Emotional Intelligence
(AL): People come to courtesans as they are- wounded, broken hearted, unsure, and inexperienced. A good courtesan is comfortable meeting someone where they are at with grace and poise, walking with them on their personal journey of intimacy. In order for someone to feel comfortable sharing their most intimate selves, a courtesan must remove personal judgement and prejudice- instead approaching each individual with a sense of wonder while she discovers who they are. No two people walk the same path, or have the same needs, wants, and desires. Stereotypes have no place in the courtesans bedroom- it is a sacred place where someone can feel comfortable sharing their inner selves and embracing connection.
(AD): Sex is only one part of what we do. People arrive carrying excitement, anxiety, loneliness, grief, curiosity, fear, confidence, insecurity, and everything in between. A great courtesan listens before she speaks. She pays attention to body language as much as words. She understands that every guest is a human being with a story, not just a reservation on a calendar. Empathy doesn’t mean sacrificing your boundaries. It means meeting people with compassion while maintaining your own. That balance is one of the greatest skills anyone can develop—not only in this profession, but in life.
3. She Builds for Herself & Accepts Herself
(AD): Comparison is a thief. Every woman has something unique to offer. Some guests want elegance. Others want adventure. Some seek intellectual conversation, while others crave playful &/or wild energy. Some want nurturing comforting affection… This list is endless. There is room for all of us. The women who build lasting careers aren’t constantly watching what everyone else is doing. They’re focused on improving themselves, refining their brand, and attracting the guests who genuinely appreciate what makes them unique. Your only competition should be who you were yesterday.
(AL): A good courtesan also accepts herself- she holds no judgment of her career or her own path in life. She loves what she does, and is someone with great capacity for emotional intelligence. She has good intuition, and trusts her gut- all qualities that are often blocked when one is inhibited by darker feelings of self doubt. When her head is clear and heart aligned with her actions, a courtesan is at her best. She accepts her limits, and takes time off to rest and recharge so she is able to share her best self with her guests.
4. She’s a Girl’s Girl & Mentor
(AL): Everyone comes into this industry with different experience- being willing to share your skills and knowledge with your peers is part of participating in the community. an experienced courtesan shares what she has learned from her experience to help new courtesans on their own journeys. She doesn’t take advantage of a newer lady, but instead helps to set her up for success. We aren’t competitive or comparative- we are complementary. Multi-lady experiences are common in this industry- having a good relationship with your colleagues benefits everyone.
(AD): This industry is challenging enough without tearing each other down. The best courtesans understand that another woman’s success doesn’t diminish their own. We celebrate each other’s wins. We share knowledge. We recommend one another when we’re unavailable or when another woman is a better fit for a guest’s needs. This isn’t a competition, it’s a collaborative effort. Because if we don’t support one another, who will?
5. She Practices Clarity & Consent
(AD): Consent isn’t just important in this industry. It is the industry. A great courtesan understands that consent is ongoing, enthusiastic, informed, and can be withdrawn at any moment by either person. She asks questions instead of making assumptions. She communicates clearly. She checks in throughout the experience. She understands that the safest, most enjoyable experiences happen when everyone feels comfortable expressing both their desires and their limits.
(AL): Consent is consistent and ongoing- it isn’t just a conversation at the beginning of the session but built into the experience where a good courtesan is able to receive feedback from her guest in a way that feels genuine and comfortable. She makes space for the guest to discover if they enjoy something for themselves- particularly when exploring kink, bdsm, and new activities for the first time. A good courtesan clearly defines safe words for the experience and respects them. Sobriety during kink and bdsm is non-optional for all participants.
Clarity has equal important to consent and goes hand in hand- a good courtesan must be able to clearly share details with the individual guest she is working with. This looks like adjusting her language to meet the guest where they are at and speaking over their head on purpose. If someone speaks a language other than your own, it may be worthwhile to introduce that guest to a colleague who speaks the same language if you are having difficulties clearly communicating. The inability for either party to clearly share their wishes, desires, and boundaries will only end poorly for both the courtesan and her guest. A good courtesan has the communication skills and curiosity to ask the questions necessary to clearly understand her guests desires- never making assumptions. She instead enables them to find their own words to describe their innermost desires- thus teaching them the communication skills necessary for success even beyond the brothel. In this way, a good courtesan is also a teacher, too.
Final Thoughts
(AD): Being a great courtesan has very little to do with having the perfect body or taking the perfect photograph.
(AL): Agreed! A beautiful mind is a rare treasure- one that requires intentional cultivation and curation. It’s developed through long term emotional regulation, self awareness, clarity of though, all of those characteristics that we described.
(AD):It’s about integrity. It’s about confidence without being an asshole. It’s about respecting yourself enough to protect your boundaries while respecting others enough to honor theirs.
(AL): Kindness, curiosity, and integrity are the values I hold to be most true in my work as a courtesan, I really appreciate how you relate respect to boundaries and honor. they’re all deeply interconnected, and oftentimes when someone lacks emotional awareness their ability to maintain boundaries becomes warped- a good courtesan must be able to always maintain clarity of boundaries in order to maintain professional integrity.
(AD):When women in this industry value themselves, support one another, practice enthusiastic consent, and lead with empathy, everyone benefits. Our guests have better experiences. Our businesses become stronger.
And together, we help elevate the reputation of legal sex work for the women who will come after us.

“Your only competition is who you were yesterday,” is so powerful for everyone to practice.
A beautiful and thoughtful discussion. Great insight from two very intelligent ladies. It would be an honor to spend time with both of you ladies. Thank you for the great discussion.
